After repeated failed attempts to negotiate with Iran to end its nuclear ambitions, U.S. intelligence learned that a rare meeting of Iran's senior political and military leadership would take place Saturday morning (February 28, 2026), at a central leadership compound housing offices tied to the presidency, the supreme leader, and Iran's National Security Council.

Most critically, intelligence indicated that Khamenei himself would be present. Khamenei, 86, had ruled Iran since 1989 and had increasingly operated from heavily secured locations amid growing regional tensions and fears of assassination.

The United States and Israel had originally planned to launch the strike overnight under cover of darkness. However, after receiving confirmation of the gathering, leaders in Washington and Jerusalem decided to alter the timing and carry out a daylight operation to exploit what officials viewed as a unique operational opportunity.

The operation began about 6 a.m. in Israel, 30 long-range missiles fired by Israeli Air Force jets struck the compound about two hours later. At the time of the strike, senior Iranian national security officials were gathered in one building inside the compound, while Khamenei was located in a nearby structure.

The IDF said Sunday it had killed 40 "key" Iranian military commanders, including Iran's chief of staff Abdolrahim Mousavi, within a minute of striking Khamenei. The IDF officially confirmed that the operation had eliminated Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing him as "the father of the plan to destroy the State of Israel" and the central figure behind Iran's decades-long campaign against Israel and the West.

His death, alongside the reported elimination of numerous senior security officials, represents what analysts describe as the most significant leadership decapitation strike in the history of the Islamic Republic.

President Donald Trump blamed Iran's slain supreme leader for a pair of assassination plots against him in 2024, linking the ayatollah's killing on Saturday to Iran's threats on his life. "I got him before he got me," Trump said. "They tried twice. Well, I got him first."

"The attack was so successful it knocked out most of the candidates tapped to replace Khamenei in the event of his incapacitation," Trump said. "It's not going to be anybody that we were thinking of because they are all dead. Second or third place is dead." Trump earlier said that it is believed that 48 senior Iranian officials were killed over the weekend.

The joint US-Israel campaign against Iran is called "Operation Epic Fury" by the United States, while Israel calls it "Roaring Lion."
